Number Porting
Number porting enables you to keep your existing mobile number whilst allowing you to change to another mobile network. This used to be a painful process but OFCOM have stepped in and will make this painless.
In the UK OFCOM has stipulated that from May 2011 you will be able to port your number within 1 working day. That will make life so much easier when you are looking for new mobile contracts. The best contract to go for is the sim only contract as you can cancel this contract with only 30 days notice anytime.
Here is the simple proceedure of number porting in UK
Contact your mobile network provder for ask them for a PAC code ( porthing authorisation code)
You will need this number to give to your new mobile network company should you wish to keep your existing mobile number. If for instance you have a pay monthly contract you can easily contact o2 and get your PAC code and more to T Mobile. Its a fairly painless process although beware when calling for your PAC code your current mobile network provider will try to entice you to stay with them. One thing to bear in mind, if you are on a long term 18 month or 24 month contract you may have to pay up for the duration of the contract if you looking to move contract before your term is up.
When you have got the PAC code then you can go to sim only contracts and choose any mobile deal you fancy. Once you chosen your mobile click on the check out button and when prompted at a question if you have a number you want to bring with you, enter your PAC code along with the PAC expiry date that is given to you by your old network provider.
